Do You Need a Prescription?

Contact Lens Prescriptions

Yes, you do need a prescription!

In the U.S., all contacts are considered drugs, and it is illegal to buy them without an eye doctor’s prescription.

The good news is that even if you have perfect vision but you want to change your eye color with colored contact lenses, you can still go to an eye doctor and get a prescription for ‘plano contacts’ AKA colored contacts that don’t change your vision.

There are different color contact brands that are regulated by the FDA including Air Optix™, Freshlooks™, and Acuvue™ and Expressions™.

Your eye doctor will measure your eyes and give you a prescription which will be the right brand & size for you.

You might be surprised to learn that it is actually illegal to buy color contacts in the U.S. without a prescription.

This is for the health and safety of your eyes. Color contacts can scratch and permanently damage your eyes if they do not fit correctly and/or are not good quality or approved by the FDA.

Make sure you purchase your contacts directly from your eye doctor or a reputable website that requires a prescription to make a purchase and sells FDA approved lenses.
